Case Creativity is blooming at LEGOLAND® and, after some innovative development work, the world-famous amusement park in Billund has received a Linde W20 electric tow tractor from N.C. Nielsen. The colourful machine has been designed as a multi-functional watering truck for the park's gardeners – and as far as we know, there is nothing quite like it anywhere else in the world.

The watering truck at LEGOLAND® is a sight to behold and a tangible tool for the park's busy gardeners. All year round, they are hard at work maintaining both the park and the hotel areas. Their green fingers have to water, plant, cut down and clear away more than 500 spots – in addition to the huge job of moving pots, hanging baskets and flower boxes for next season's planting.

"We're really pleased for our new Linde W20 watering truck. It has been well-received in the working environment and meets the different needs in the gardening department. It plays a key role in our working day, when we need to get around the park quickly and perform a large number of maintenance tasks," says Lars Sandgaard, gardener at LEGOLAND®.

Creative development work

The sturdy Linde W20 tow tractor is the result of an intensive creative process. LEGOLAND® was looking for a specially developed, functional and eye-catching machine. It had to be able to drive around backstage areas, inside the amusement park and on the public roads next to the neighbouring hotels. All this involved numerous technical challenges – and would require thinking outside the box.

A development team was set up at LEGOLAND® to find a solution. The team scoured the market for machines of this type and soon began thinking of the Linde machines that pull the luggage carts at Billund Airport. They then contacted N.C. Nielsen with an enquiry, which proved fruitful and led to an exciting development project.

"We have had a fantastic collaboration with N.C. Nielsen, who were on-board with the idea from the start. We have had numerous development meetings, have visited Balling and enjoyed an innovative process. For example, we wanted a slightly lower tank on the cart, so that the water would not splash around as much, and we were also able to find a solution there," says Lars Sandgaard.

Can fill up in minutes

The Linde watering truck has a 1,000-litre capacity tank that needs filling up several times a day during growing season. This is done from a ladder platform, where the gardeners fill the tank with water and can also add liquid fertiliser. From the back of the cart, the gardener can pull two 25-metre hoses out and water the plants with individual pressure from the installed pumps.

The Linde W20 tow tractor is a sturdy machine with a towing capacity of two tonnes, a solid payload and a high-performance electric motor. This ensures the watering cart a stable drive around LEGOLAND®, where it often needs to manoeuvre around narrow paths and where the smooth power steering really comes into its own. The truck also has an automatic handbrake to prevent it from unintentionally rolling down slopes.

"I would like to highlight its use value, functionality and ergonomic details. It's easy to get in and out of the driver's cab, while the controls are child's play. Plus, the Linde W20 has a short turning radius, which is crucial in the park where careful driving is essential for safety reasons. With its colourful design, it's also visible branding for LEGOLAND®, points out Lars Sandgaard.

In addition to the water tank, the Linde W20 has a built-in storage space with shutters, so the gardeners can bring along hand towels, extra fertiliser, watering cans and rubbish bins. The cab has room for two people as well as storage space, while the watering truck is also equipped for all gardening jobs imaginable.
