Case Skamol’s internal logistics is all about gradual changes, little adjustments and continuous machinery updates. Skamol and N.C. Nielsen therefore joined forces to ensure a process of development with focus on long-term benefits, be it within operating costs, service quality, green transition, safety or future technology.

At the three Danish plants in Branden, Rødding and at Fur, Skamol had built a mixed fleet through the years consisting of around 35-40 machines of various makes, configurations, propellants and fuels. It no longer paid to keep these machines running. So there was an urgent need to sort through the fleet and take a further look at the total costs

Test runs

Skamol left no stone unturned when it came to finding a well-proven solution. Detailed requirements specifications were prepared, market research was completed, and an evaluation form was made for the three chosen suppliers that each made a test machine available for 14 days. Form in hand, operators at the three plants assessed comparable key issues to form a solid basis for their decisions.

- The overall test winner was the Linde electric truck from N.C. Nielsen. The operators agreed that the Linde electric truck performed the best within all parameters described. Our choice is based on combined recommendations from the operators, a specific quotation and an expectation for future cooperation, says Søren Axelsen, Procurement & Logistics Manager, Skamol.

Only one supplier

Choosing Linde and N.C. Nielsen is based on a wish for long-term cooperation for many years in the future. With N.C. Nielsen as the main supplier, Skamol anticipates a number of advantages of large-scale operations. For example, Skamol only has one point of contact; in fact, only one Key Account Manager with N.C. Nielsen as well as direct contact with a local service engineer.

As the first step in the agreement, N.C. Nielsen delivered seven leased electric trucks of which one is operating at the Fur plant, three at the Branden plant and four are at work at the Rødding location west of Balling where Skamol has its production as well as its central warehouse for the other plants. Together with several stackers purchased from N.C. Nielsen, all Linde machines are now working and contribute to Skamol's internal transport.

- Our cooperation lives up to our expectations in every way. Our operators are extremely happy with the machines that work smoothly with full uptime each and every day. We’re also happy with N.C. Nielsen's local service engineer who shows up at short notice if we have any technical questions or would like to adjust a few things. We’re excited about our continued cooperation with N.C. Nielsen where we see many perspectives, for example in fleet management, automation and several environmentally sound solutions, says Søren Axelsen, Procurement & Logistics Manager, Skamol.

N.C. Nielsen is also excited about continuing cooperation with Skamol whose Danish plants are located a short distance from N.C. Nielsen's headquarters in Balling. The idea of long-term cooperation that gradually develops is in line with N.C. Nielsen’s philosophy of close customer relations:

- We’ve gotten to know Skamol very well. We see our cooperation as an exciting journey of development where we inspire each other to find even better solutions. We’re happy that Skamol chose a red direction focusing on Linde, and we look forward to presenting other technological initiatives to Skamol to improve their competitiveness, says Allan Christensen, Head of Key Account, N.C. Nielsen.
