Case There’s no reason to change something that works. That’s the philosophy at Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), which has just received nine brand-new Terberg RT283 terminal tractors from N.C. Nielsen. In fact, these blue-painted terminal tractors are the third generation at CMP, and their choice of machine underlines the Danish-Swedish port operator’s continued focus on reliability, stability, and maximum uptime.

The tractors operate across multiple sites in the Freeport and North Harbour areas, moving 300–400 trailers daily. They handle loose trailers, caravans and other units from RoRo ships, transfer containers to trains, store goods, and transport items like recyclable paper using elevating and rotating trailers called translifters.

Rush hour at the port

The expansion of the CMP fleet reflects growing activity at the Malmö terminal, which now spans more than 250,000 m². There are four daily ship arrivals, including a new Finnlines ferry route to Świnoujście in Poland carrying both passengers and large volumes of cargo. When ships dock, the Terberg RT283 fleet is in full action, quickly loading and unloading the vessels.

These operations demand a high degree of coordination from CMP drivers and the machine fleet, which – besides Terberg – includes Linde forklifts, Konecranes reach stackers and various attachments like translifters. Efficient ramp work requires powerful engines, clear visibility, a rotatable driver’s seat and four-wheel drive for traction on inclines.

“We have had very good experiences with Terberg terminal tractors. In our opinion, they’re the best on the market. They’re virtually indestructible, have plenty of power, offer excellent cab comfort, and run on HVO 100 biofuel, which reduces CO₂ emissions. This supports our target of a CO₂-neutral mobile fleet by 2025,” says Teis Lind, Purchasing Manager at CMP.

Driver comfort in focus

CMP drivers are heavily involved in the design of the cab layout. They are asked to share input and improvement ideas, and these are taken into account when replacing machines. The layout of controls, instruments, wide-angle mirrors, the rotatable seat and ergonomic cabin details have all been defined by the drivers.

“Cab comfort is crucial during long shifts. Our drivers need optimal working conditions, especially when many trailers have to be shuttled quickly while ships are docked. That requires precision and focus, and comfort makes a real difference,” adds Teis Lind.

Operationel leasing

CMP uses operational leasing as a commercial solution for its Terberg terminal tractors and other machines from N.C. Nielsen. This model is cost-efficient, gives predictable monthly expenses, and eliminates concerns over service, depreciation or unexpected repairs.

“Operational leasing makes business sense for us, mainly due to the financial model and N.C. Nielsen’s strong service setup. Their service technicians can be on-site quickly, and we’ve built a solid collaboration over the years – with shared workshop space at the Malmö port and open technical dialogue,” concludes Teis Lind.
