Case N.C. Nielsen supplied a fairly new, used Konecranes SMV 4535 reach stacker to Hirtshals Stevedore that has built up a machinery fleet to handle the port shipping businesses, shipping companies and other companies. The giant with a lifting capacity of 45 tonnes is on 24-hour standby and must flexibly move ship cargo at the heavy end of the scale.

The correct lifting equipment is alpha and omega at Hirtshals Stevedore. Since the beginning of 2008, it has received three terminal tractors, 19 Linde forklifts and now a Konecranes SMV 4535 reach stacker from N.C. Nielsen. The fleet is handled by 16 men on a rotational basis, operating at the entire port with transporting containers, driving to cold/freezing stores and not least managing lifting tasks with very heavy ship cargo.

Heavy goods

The Port of Hirtshals has become a cargo hub in the northern part of Jutland, and many ships from Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands call at the port. The ships carry machinery parts, containers, wind turbine parts, trailers, transformer substations and much more. The flow of goods is increasing, and the trend is clear: The goods become heavier and heavier, making new demands on lifting equipment, safety and handling:

- We need very powerful machinery that can typically manage capacities of 35-40 tonnes or more. At the same time, we use various special equipment such as auxiliary lifting accessories, chains and straps to quickly mount on the machine for urgent assignments. It is crucial to our company that we can adapt and manage the lifting tasks while the ships are in port, says Uffe Nielsen, General Manager, Hirtshals Stevedore.

Operational Konecranes

Uffe Nielsen from Hirtshals Stevedore continuously explores the market for lifting equipment, and for a while, he had been looking for one of Konecranes’ reach stackers with a couple of thousand operating hours behind it. He found that with N.C. Nielsen in Balling. In addition to the brand-new machines, they also provide a wide range of new, operational equipment:

- I know N.C. Nielsen very well from our terminal tractors and forklifts. It was therefore our first choice to look in that direction when considering a future reach stacker. I was in Balling to take a look at the Konecranes machine which we ended up buying. Among other equipment, it comes with a spreader and custom-made lifting accessories, making it possible to lift even very difficult goods, says Uffe Nielsen from Hirtshals Stevedore.

N.C. Nielsen recognises the picture of strict requirements for reach stackers, terminal tractors and other special-purpose machines. There is much focus on the heavy handling area with consultation, a range of new as well as used machines and the correct special equipment for the tasks:

- The Heavy Handling sector is currently undergoing significant expansion. Our customers increasingly ask for custom-made solutions for the many various transport tasks. Terberg terminal tractors and Konecranes forklifts and reach stackers are available in many variants, and we can even make customised reach stackers with lifting capacities of up to 152 tonnes. With a wide variety of optional equipment, we can find solutions to even the most difficult tasks at port terminals, distribution centres and industrial companies, says Jørgen Lund, Sales Manager, N.C. Nielsen.
