The electrification of terminal and port operations is not only about replacing diesel with batteries. It is just as much about choosing the right machine for the task, ensuring the right charging infrastructure and creating a complete solution that works in daily operations. With Terberg’s electric YT, RT and BC models, the product programme now covers several of the key tasks within heavy internal transport.
“Many companies today have a clear ambition to electrify their internal transport, but the solution still has to stand up to real-world conditions. That is where the Terberg EV programme becomes interesting. The Terberg YT203EV has been developed for efficient trailer movement at distribution centres, port terminals, airports and industrial companies. The electric Yard Tractor is built with few moving parts, which can reduce maintenance requirements and contribute to high uptime in busy operations. At the same time, the electric powertrain delivers lower noise levels and a working environment without local emissions.
With the Terberg RT253EV, the electric programme is expanded into the RoRo segment. The model has been developed for tasks where four-wheel drive, high tractive power and stable control are crucial – for example when driving on steep RoRo ramps, in port environments, on ferries and in industrial companies with uneven or demanding surfaces.
“The RT253EV is a machine we have been waiting for for a long time – and one the market has clearly been waiting for as well. We have worked closely with Terberg on the development, and we can already see that it meets a genuine need: an electric RoRo tractor that is just as powerful as a diesel machine, but delivers a fundamentally better working environment, for example on board a vessel,” says Claus Lilleholt.
The Terberg BC203EV is aimed at companies handling swap bodies, containers and different load types at terminals and distribution centres. The electric Body Carrier combines powerful electric drive with a hydraulic system developed for efficient lifting and handling in a working day filled with repetitive tasks.

One of the clear advantages of Terberg’s electric models is the working environment. When the diesel engine is removed, emissions from the machine disappear and noise levels are reduced significantly. This is particularly relevant in terminal areas, around ramps and inside RoRo vessels, where ventilation, noise and space conditions can be challenging. At the same time, the electric drivetrain provides a more direct and smoother driving experience. This is noticeable in day-to-day operations, where drivers often carry out many repetitive manoeuvres and short transport cycles during a working day.
“When you speak to operators, the working environment is often the first thing they highlight. Less noise, no exhaust fumes and a calmer machine make a big difference when you sit in the cab for many hours a day. It is not just about the green transition, but also about creating a better and more efficient workplace,” says Claus Lilleholt.
For N.C. Nielsen, the electrification of heavy internal transport is a consultancy task before it is a machine choice. The right solution depends on driving patterns, load, ramps, distances, operating hours, charging options, temperature conditions and uptime requirements. That is why dialogue about machine type, battery configuration, charging and service is a natural part of the process, and for particularly heavy or complex tasks the solution may also include Scheuerle SPMT trailers and Seacom trailers, among other things, so the transport task can be considered as one complete solution from the outset.
“The service organisation is a central part of the solution. Electric machines still require a strong setup around maintenance, spare parts, technical support and fast response if operations are to remain reliable in a day-to-day environment where the machines often form a critical part of the flow. Our job is to help customers choose correctly from the very beginning. That applies to the machine, charging, service and the overall setup around the handling task,” says Claus Lilleholt.
The Scandinavian markets place high demands on operational reliability, the working environment and flexibility.
